The Princess Bride An epic hero is generally a male of noble birth who reflects important ideals of his society and performs courageous-sometimes even superhuman-deeds. This type of hero takes place in settings that often involves more than one nation, where he would determine the fate of that nation or group of people. This is contrary to what a romantic hero is, which is on who goes on adventures from which he seeks meaning, may be defeated, but will survive his shame, and one who has a sense of duty to be conquered. Rob Reiner’s, The Princess Bride, uses the characteristics of a romantic hero to prove that true love never fades. Westley was just a farm boy for Buttercup when they fell in love. When he had to leave, he told her “hear this now: I will always come back for you.” Buttercup replied, “but how can you be sure?” and Westley replied one last time with “this is true love- you think this happens every day?”During his absence, Buttercup received the news that Westley had been killed. As she stated that she would never love again, Prince Humperdinck chose her as his wife to be and left her with no choice but to accept his offer. This life was supposed to subside her grieving over Westley, however when she was captured by Vizzini and his crew, marriage was the last thing on her mind. Taken to Vizzini’s location with him, Inigo Montoya was left behind to fight ‘the man in black’ who has previously been following Vizzini by boat. At the time of battle was proved by ‘the man in black’ that he was not as good as a fencer as he thought he was. Defeated by this mysterious man, not by death but by forfeit, Montoya explained to the masked man where Vizzini was headed with the princess. Determined to find her, ‘the man in black,’ sought this adventure to save her and get rid of everything is his path. ‘The masked man’ came across Vizzini and
