Tracie Campanella Sandra Miller English 090-05A Paper 1 10/28/2013 What I Bring to PPCC For many years I have worked and supported my family in the food service industry. While reading Mike Rose’s essay’ “The Waitress in Motion”, My mind drifts to the different jobs I have had; and to when I was a young child learning to read, and the values of how important it is to do well in school to get a good job. My jobs have included Wendy’s cashier, Mcdonalds grill master, Kingsoopers deli clerk/chef, and Albertsons deli clerk. All these jobs are different, yet very much the same. Like being in school my work experience has taught me the value of customer service, and how to prioritize my duties. Yet I have health issues that is making my life hard to live up to my personal values. I may struggle, but I do manage to get things done. So I guess what I bring to PPCC is my ability to prioritize what tasks need to be done first. I had mentioned Mike Rose’s essay; “The Waitress in Motion,” because I had a lot in common with Rosie. Rose mentions the waitress gets good at “working smart.” Like a waitress in my job as a deli clerk I have to be good at working smart as well. This is where prioritizing of tasks comes in. For example, what needs to be done first? I always ask myself before starting work. This is where reading and writing are also good to know. If I couldn’t read or write, I wouldn’t never know when the product was expired, or how to write how much I have made of a certain product. I have always been a good reader, always in advanced reading in school. My writing I think was pretty good I had a poem published about 12 years ago. I believe that if I couldn’t read and write I would never have gotten as far in life as I am today; This is thanks to my parents for being tough on me and teaching the value of an education. Thanks to my parents again for teaching
