During wars, armies use the opposing sides’ disadvantages to work in their favor. The War for Independence was no different. England held the advantage of having the most dominant Navy in the world. Their naval power was incredibly overwhelming, especially to the colonists whose navy was nonexistent. Not only were the English more capable of winning a sea battle due to their superior Navy, they had the upper hand on land also.
This benefit allowed tactics such as the ‘wedge’ to be executed as more soldiers could reinforce the wedge from behind, which would consequently break the enemies’ formation (Roman Empire.net 2012). America’s successes in war generally boosted nationalism and spirit in the people. The United States were the true victors of war coming out with the most. Unlike other many other nations, America’s land, aside from Pearl Harbor, was barely touched omitting any extra time or money that would be necessary for reconstruction. Many have tried since then but all have failed, such as the Spanish armada in 1588. As we are surrounded by water a strong navy has always been crucial throughout the ages. At the time of the British Empire we had a navy that was at least twice the size of anybody else’s. We are a small island and we cannot feed our population with what we grow in this country so we relied upon supplies from overseas. We had a stable political system which was a huge advantage, because in other countries they still had monarchy and if one person disagreed with the king the he would be beheaded.
This system was a very good system and worked well because everyone was happy with what they got in return. Domesday Book and Taxes William and his lords came up with the idea to create a book with all the details of peoples taxes. The book was called the ‘Domesday Book’. He sent officials everywhere to record how much money people had and owed then reported back to William with the book so he had a clear idea of tax and money situations Castles Castles were built to protect William and his soldiers. Building castles helped his control over England because they reminded people who was in charge and it intimidated some people as they were scared to approach him.
