What Gaps Do You Believe Exist in Preparing University Students for the World of Business?

It is with no doubt that, there is a gap between what the business world needs and what education offers. This mis-match can, however, be addressed. I strongly believe that tertiary institutions do not prepare students very well for the business world. Furthermore, students are not prepared enough to put in much effort as individuals in their careers. One of the biggest issues is how slowly institutions, particularly, tertiary institutions respond when presented with employer skills. Building or amending and implementing a curriculum take long and once it is implemented, the business world has advanced and this means that the skills that were required will be outdated. Majority of educators are emphasizing impartial knowledge to their students to memorize and be good test takers. From my experience of being at two universities, I can say that, the most effective lecturers are the ones who have experience in the real world. I strongly believe that teachers and professors who spent their entire careers merely in academia could primarily, only relate to academia. This means that, without the need to have practical use of their knowledge, they teach students to be academics too. Another contributing factor for the existence of the gap in preparing university students for the world of business, I believe, it is the lack of practice of what students learn. Practice will help students gain insights from the practice of being on the job and gain a more practical approach once they enter the business world. This is where the “rubber meets the road” and students can transition to be effective contributors in the business world. We need better career pathways and private-public partnerships to help build skilled graduates. This means more than just vacation work, for instance, a week of learning and a week of practicing.
