They burned entire villages and by 1882 had nearly caused the wild buffalo to go extinct (Doc. 6). The Massacre at Wounded Knee was particularly brutal. Over one hundred Sioux men, women, and children were slaughtered at the battle. There were usually limited American casualties during battles with the Indians.
Trace the roots of the Civil War. Why did sectionalism ultimately result in violence in the United States? Was the conflict inevitable or could it have been avoided? Explain. I believe that the Civil War began with the debate over the future of slavery.
Slavery was the main cause of the breakup of the Union and influenced other factors, such as territorial expansion, industrialization and economic tensions, and political alignments. Combined, all of these conflicts, with slavery at the root, led to the conflicts in the nation that started the Civil War. The issue of slavery caused conflict regarding new territories, economic stratification, and political turmoil. All of these tensions served to divide the nation, North against South, to start the Civil War. Slavery, in itself, was the most predominant reason for the breakup of the Union.
The North saw the issue of slavery as an evil. They believed that slavery was an impurity that became accustomed to life in America, in which made other systems of commerce forgotten. In a nation where freedom and equality is given, the property owning of people is wrong. In Hinton Helper’s “The Impending Crisis,” Hinton stresses the economic effects of slavery to the U.S. He goes on suggesting that the U.S cannot depend on only slavery and the staple crops to pull the nation forward.
The infamous Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland, occurred on September 17th, 1862, being known as one of the most gruesome and significant battles of the entire war. As described by Captain Robert Shaw, he shared his thoughts of the horrific day to a letter home to his parents. “Every battle makes me wish more and more that the war was over, “It seems almost as if nothing could justify a battle like that of the 17th, and the horrors inseparable from it.” There were a total of 6,000 plus causalities for both sides, making it one of the bloodiest, if not the bloodiest day in American history. McPherson even compared Antietam to historic battles such as Normandy, where McPherson described Antietam as having four times the amount of Normandy causalities on June 6, 1944. A United States Commission Official would describe the battle as “utter devastation and ruin” where “For four miles in length, and nearly half a mile in width, the ground is strewn with .
During the 1800s, America was divided between the north and the south. The north was known as the Union and the South was known as the Confederacy. During that time, the Union was in conflict with the southern states because of pro- and antislavery arguments. This later became one of the reasons of why the Civil War began in the first. Slavery was a common problem in the United States.
During this time 11 southern slave states seceded from the United States and formed the Confederacy, witch fought against all states allowing slavery (free states) known as the Union. Although slavery was an attribute to the cause of the Civil War, it was not as simplistic as to just freeing the slaves. However there were more reasons that led to this grave battle like secession, as the War between the States emerged over tensions due to industrialization, state and federal rights, slave and non-slave provisions, and the election of Abraham Lincoln. During this time the North had a diverse and fast growing economy based on industry, mining, commerce and transportation like the railroad, with a large and growing population without the use of slavery north of the border states. However the South was driven by a workforce that thrived off the plantation system, which was basically the use of slaves.
Politically, the slavery issue caused conflicts between the industrialized North and the agricultural South. Politicians thought they had found in the issue of expansionism a means to defuse the slavery issue that threatened to divide both the country and the party (Bai 35). Last but not the least, a great number
But when the 5th encirclement, consisting of 700,000 men, broke through, they killed hundreds of thousands of peasants [History.com]. As a result, Mao Zedong was removed as chairman of the Communist Central Committee. The Committee employed conventional war tactics and the Red Army of 86,000 men left Jiangxi Province [China Daily]. The line of marchers stretched over 50 miles and they moved at night to avoid an attack from the enemy. October 14th 1934 the Communists started the longest journey of their lives, the Long March.
President Lincoln's identified in his opening remarks the historical background of 1863. The town of Gettysburg was transformed by war. During a intense battle lasting three days over 85,000 Federal soldiers and 65,000Confederate soldiers battled within a twenty-five square mile area of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The number of wounded, missing and dead from this single battle was unprecedented at that time. This destruction for the North was estimated at greater than 3,100 reported dead and over 14,500 wounded.
