How is the issue of violence represented in the lives of individuals in your core text and in one other related text? Violence is presented in Blackrock and Harry Brown through the issues of, the negative influence of peers, the influence of drugs, and powerlessness. These can be seen in various scenes in both texts where youths are creating harmful situations for themselves and others around them. These issues can be examined in the scene where Ricko and Jared fight which causes the relationship between them to melt. In Harry Brown, night raids turn into a large scale riot which is a powerful example of the negative influence of peers.
They have been conquered twice in the last 30 years each by governments the countrymen hated and still blood is shed every day in wars between the U.S and the Taliban or Al Qaeda. In the novel, the theme of violence is inter-related with the theme of betrayal. For example, when Amir fails to stand up and protect Hassan and, in essence, betrays him, a violent scene of rape and torture follows. Furthermore, just before Hassan is raped, another violent image is shown through kite fighting itself. The kites battle for supremacy as do the children below who are flying them.
Throughout society’s existence, members of the LGBT community have battled oppression, faced intolerance, and dealt with immense prejudice, yet were forced to remain silent. However, a new era was marked by a chain of uprisings commonly known as the ‘Stonewall Riots’. These were a series of violent confrontations between police and gay rights activists in New York City. In response to the second raid in a week by police on the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village that had been selling liquor without a license, about 1,000 transvestites, gays, and lesbians fought back against police by shouting, throwing debris, and refusing to exit the premises. The police officers responded mercilessly with violence, and many of the rioters were brutally beaten and injured.

The way the Socs and Greasers recognized each other is closely similar of the way gangs do it in modern day, usually by clothing and symbols. Most of the gangs of today do not even know why they are fighting. They are simply told to stand up for one another and to jump or kill rival gang members. This is exactly what Hinton displayed between the Socs and the Greasers. The never ending cycle of the “we got each other’s back” code leads to the tension between the two groups.
Al became a part of a couple of different gangs growing up, such as the Bowery Boys and the Junior Forty Thieves. He then moved up to bigger city gangs like the Brooklyn Rippers and the Malicious Five Points Gang. It was during Capone’s time working for a bartender name Frankie Yale when he obtained the scars that gave him the nickname “Scarface”. Capone was slashed three times in the face by Frank Gallucio, for insulting his sister as he was working at the door of a Brooklyn night club, not knowing that in the near future Frank would, ironically, become the bodyguard of Mr. Al Capone. In 1927 Capone fled New York and moved to Chicago to reunite with his mentor Torrio, who saw many job opportunities such as bootlegging during the prohibition.
