Happiness achieved in Brave New World is phony. They achieve happiness not through actually feeling it, but with soma. Whenever they start to realize the reality of Brave New World and get upset about life, or don’t understand things they take soma. They do not experience real happiness. It is just a drug able to drown away ones negative feelings.
Power is a privilege and should only be given to those who can handle it. The act of counterfeit can often hinder success. King Henry himself rose to the thrown with help from the Percy’s as he “stole all the courtesy from heaven” and broke Richard’s “divine right” to being King. Although he is successful in gaining power, because of its illegitimacy, Henry struggles to use his this effectively. As he suggests to Hal, he wants to be “like a comet” to be seen on a rare basis to be “wondered at” by his subjects.
He is poking fun at the age old concept of ‘equality,’ one that has inspired wars and movements alike; he accomplishes this by creating a system to make everyone equal, a system that happens to be just as stupid as the idea of ‘total equality.’ Under this system equality is achieved, but it is at the cost of individual freedom and a society full of stupid people, this in-turn creates the situational irony found in the story. The plot of the story itself is a piece of situational irony, however there are many other instances found throughout it, including verbal irony. One specific example of this is when Hazel and George are talking, Vonnegut writes “ ‘I think I’d make a good Handicapper General. (Hazel)’ ‘Good as anybody else,’ said George.” His response to Hazel’s comment is slightly sarcastic, but also ironic, in that she really would be “as good anybody else” because in their society everyone is just as good or bad as everybody else. Another example of this false sense of equality is when George says,
There are numerous reasons why and they are because though she committed a terrible sin doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, Hester could have giving up on pearl but she pleaded to keep her, and pearl is Hester’s only prize possession Hester Prynne committed a crime and sin that is very extreme in the puritan society. She is an adulterer and had a baby out of wedlock but this doesn’t mean Hester is a bad person. Years after Pearls birth Hester became more active in the society she brings food to the doors of poor people, she nurses the sick, and she is a source of aid in times of trouble. Hester also starts interpreting the scarlet A as her being “able” rather than “adulterer”. According to chapter 13 Hester became more speculative thinking about what it means to become a woman of her society.
And this contrasts with how she felt when she belonged and had her identity in America. However, Betty chose to convert for her husband as she loved him; however the shift in the attitude towards her husband decreased immensely as he started to treat her as an outcast and she never achieved the sense of belonging within the family. Betty and Elizabeth Proctor both respect the religions and cultures they have. However, Moody’s family are only interested in her as the mother of her husband’s child; her role appears as to be the infidel mother of an Islamic daughter, and never belonged within the family. In the scene where Moody tells Betty that they’re staying at Tehran she replies “You lied to me, you held the Koran and you swore to me that nothing was going to happen, you were planning this all the time.
10, by James Madison, comes at a time when America is starting to become a country of its own. America has won the Revolution and Madison is trying to get Americans to approve the new constitution. Madison’s editorial is the most influential in my opinion because it points out the negatives of the old system and how the new system will improve on these negatives. Madison explains that “instability, injustice, and confusion introduced into the public councils, have, in truth, been the mortal diseases under which popular governments have everywhere perished.” (Madison 53-54) Madison realizes that there are different opinions concerning everything from government to religion. He explains that since there are so many different opinions, arguments will occur.
Of course, those already in power bitterly resent this; that is why there is such a strong anti-democratic streak in wealthy conservatives and business owners. They complain that democracy allows the poor to legally steal from the rich. (Liberals counter that unregulated capitalism allows the rich to exploit and therefore steal from the poor, and taxes simply correct for that.) But democracy also works in the other direction as well. If we lived in a society where everyone was paid equally, despite their different inputs, people would surely vote to create a system of incentives and rewards.
In the story she said,”Why you’re on e of my babies. You’re one of my own children.” For once in the whole story she finally care about somebody that has not her. She tries to care for the Misfit in order to save her life when she didn’t even care about her family and what happened to them. Only when she knew that it was the end for her that she wanted to change and care for someone
We, the citizenry either ignore that this is going on, or turn our heads and busy ourselves with our own lives and know that the authorities will take care of the problem.
