Americans’ admiration for wealth has locked them in a closet of luxury and, as a result, blinded them from their morals and other values in life. In his book, Money and Class in America, Lewis Lapham states that Americans are driven by money and envision it as “the currency of the soul.” Unfortunately, we Americans do validate Lapham's statement by allowing our money to show our success and happiness, therefore granting the rights to show out ignorance. Social mobility – it is the primary effect of the American Dream, which itself is an idea that seems simple, but is strangely hard to define. At the root of it, is the sense of a society’s greed for success obtained by hard work, honesty, and modesty. If in fact this Dream were in the reach of anybody, then society would exist as a community where "all men are created equal" and everyone would have the opportunity of social mobility by doing the best for themselves as they could. But the reality of American society is cruel. A once high, mighty, and pure ideal has become degraded and buried by the merciless greed for money.

After reading and getting a sense or idea of what wilding is, things made more sense. I do believe that the idea of wilding can make people go crazy or obsess about their greed and the only thing stopping us all from wilding is not understanding what wilding is. I also believe that people would rather take shortcuts to being wealthy other than working hard and earning it. Like what Derber said, “Many signs point to a corruption of the American Dream in out time. Most Americans do not become killers to make it up the ladder or to hold on to what hey have, but the traditional restraints on naked self-aggrandizement seem weaker-and the insatiability greater” (Derber, p. 14).

Philip II did nothing a leader should do, a leader should be able to allow there people to be secure, allow the people to allow them to grow financially, and allow them to follow their religion of choice. In this book the thing everyone strives for is based off of superficial and materialistic goals, the characters all want to just become as rich as they can and mainly care about money and power. Fitzgerald uses wealth, irresponsibility, and materialism as symbols to portray that the dream is unachievable. Throughout the story, Fitzgerald suggests that the state of the American Dream is more hallow and shallow through each person. Jay Gatsby portrays a good example of the American Dream. He was a flashy celebrity who obtained wealth to impress the girl he loved most, Daisy.
Hollow Dreams After World War I, financial and social opportunities were substantial for anyone willing to work hard. This lead to people pursuing dreams of wealth, which they thought would lead to pleasure. Illegal activities such as “bootlegging” were very common, as well as gambling, like when the 1919 World Series was fixed. Little did they know, these dreams wouldn’t lead them to happiness. In Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, he uses characterization to suggest that chasing hollow dreams leads only to misery.
The wealthy have the means for making new technology accessible to themselves, and because of this it gives them, great knowledge and knowledge is the foundation of power, which leads to more wealth. On the contrary, the plunging descent of those individuals who are financially crippled and therefore, do not have a passage to power or wealth or technology. This inequality put the wealthiest people in a position to dominate and in some cases control the decision-making process while leaving the less fortunate under the eight ball with their needs being ignored and they not being fulfilled.
