Describe New Zealand’s four waves of immigration and explain using specific examples, how each migrant contributed to New Zealand’s national character Between the years of 900 A.D.-Present 4 different waves of migrants travelled to New Zealand. The first wave was the Maori. One of the reasons they left their country was because of the growing population and a reason the wanted to come to New Zealand was because of the quest to find new land. The second wave to come to New Zealand was the colonial European. A reason they left Europe was because of poverty and a reason they came to New Zealand was because of land opportunity. The next wave was the Pacific Islanders. An example of a push factor for them was all the natural disasters and a pull factor was the better education. The last wave to come to New Zealand was the Asians and South Africans. A push factor for them was the strict laws and a pull factor was the smaller population. The Maori wave arrived in New Zealand between 900-1200 A.D. They wanted to leave their home country because of their growing population, food, land and conflict between other Maori. They came to New Zealand because the journey they wanted to go on, they had the ability to travel, there are birds and there is more food. When the Maori came to New Zealand they brought with them Maori dance that we use in ceremonies, designs you can find on clothes, jewellery designs, different buildings such as the Marae, food like the hangi, names of places like Whakatane and the whanau grouping system that we use in Macleans today. The Colonial Europeans arrived in New Zealand between the years of 1840-1920 A.D. They left Europe because of the poverty that they were surrounded by every day, hunger, homelessness, harsh punishments, poor living and polluted land.
