Reflection Paper (The Drought) By Anon The state of California is going through one of the worst droughts ever recorded in the past 100 years(California’s Drought). It’s no surprise that with the lack of rain we have had in the past two years, water reservoirs are reaching an all-time low. They are constantly working in overtime trying to provide the residents of California with the water needed to sustain their households. Although we are putting pressure on our water reservoirs, it’s still not enough to get us by anymore and the government has also asked that people cut back on water usage. It’s sad to think that the state of California has already had a couple of cities run out of water.
Food shortages were a key problem in Russia as it meant the people were starving and desperate. It has consistently been a problem to the rulers of Russia such as the Provisional government. The people wanted change but they also wanted grain to feed themselves and their family. It was important that the food crisis would be solved by the Bolsheviks in order to gain the support of the people; however, due to Russia’s poor transport and little fertile land, it was simply an impossible job for any party or rulers of Russia especially due to the high demand of the huge populace. The demand for food has always been high in Russia which meant that no matter what reforms or radical changes a party can bring in, if they can’t feed the people there will always be bitterness which can and did result in opposition to Lenin and his Bolsheviks.
Unfortunately, Brisbane residents are unable to conserve water without restrictions, which is why the restrictions system is utilized by local government. Brisbane residents have lived with level 6 water restrictions for the past 2 years and as they have been so limited there will undoubtedly be a self indulgent splurge by almost ever house hold. The dams won’t be able to handle the rush and it will only result in short term gain for long term loss. On level 6 water restrictions, the parameters for water use are 140 liters per person per day. At 40 per cent of the reserves, water restrictions will be reduced to level 3 which is 170 liters per person per day.
Insurance companies were pounded after the storm with many insurance claims due to all the flooding and wind damage. A lot of policies would not cover the flooding that was caused by storm surge. This left a lot of people with no money to fix their homes and an insurance policy that is useless. Not only were the people homeless, but also lost all of their clothes, beds, and valuables. Many of the valuables and memories could not be replaced.
As states before the most important thing that a body needs is water. People have been known to survive weeks, even months without food. But go just one day without water and you are at serious risk. “Water is such an essential dietary components because it is involved in every bodily faction. Water
Canadian Poverty and Equal Distribution Angela Hormaza BA – Section F Economics October 14, 2011 Poverty can affect all age groups. Poverty is the state of lacking resources that provide people with basic necessities, or that force people to go without certain needed things like three meals a day or shelter. Yet it should be understood that people can still have some of these things, like a roof over their heads, and not enough of other things, like food or money to seek proper medical treatment. When we think about poverty, we automatically think of third world countries, such as Africa, Colombia and Cuba, within many others. But the sad truth is that many Canadians struggle with poverty every day.
Figure 2 shows how developing countries such as Ghana and Colombia pay a lot more for their water meaning that a larger proportion of their income is spent on what is seen as the most basic resource. This can mean that for the poorer population water is sometimes unaffordable which puts their health at risk as they may seek water from contaminated sources; diseases like cholera are more likely to spread due to lack of clean water and due to lack of hygiene. Often in countries such as Ghana, the poorer population do not have access to running water in their homes and therefore have to walk long distances to collect water; this also highlights a poor quality of life. Due to high water costs, countries such as these are unable to use water for luxury purposes e.g. dishwashers and therefore water wastage is less likely.
The lack of school material, clothes, or even living in terrible conditions can lead to the not reaching their full potential due to the lack of motivation. The government in 2012 released 3.5 billion dollars to The Native American Reservations, which for 350,000 people is equivalent to 1000 dollars (Volz, “$3.4B Indian Lawsuit Ends, Disbursements to Begin”). However, how far might this money go in a struggling household? The insufficient environment that Native Americans live in is nothing like we might find in any cities in the Northwest. The lack of motivation caused by years of not having a job and watching your family suffer in poverty is a condition that not too many of us are familiar with.
Growing up in a town that is heavily populated with low income families, I felt like I had seen most of the struggles first hand not knowing all the issues behind and kept inside the homes of each family. I feel like it is a major issue in America and not enough is being done to help stop it. Food availability is something that goes at the top of the chain. If food is not available then hunger sets in, which results in not getting adequate nutrition. Even though that is a simple chain it causes a tremendous amount of health issues for many
Ashly Gourdie English 101/504 Dr. Martinez October 15th, 2012 The Waterless State Do you ever wondered what it be like if one day you go get a drink of water but no water was coming out of the fosset? Well, in New Mexico there is a high risk of drought but people keep thinking that there is a limitless amount of water. Despite how much rain fall New Mexico gets each year, millions of gallons of water are being used each day by corporations’ and the people. But when the time comes for people to start realizing the effects it has on the water system it might be too late. Well the U.S. Geological Survey released a report showing that Albuquerque was pumping out its ground water nearly three times faster than it could be replenished (174).
