Figure 2 shows how developing countries such as Ghana and Colombia pay a lot more for their water meaning that a larger proportion of their income is spent on what is seen as the most basic resource. This can mean that for the poorer population water is sometimes unaffordable which puts their health at risk as they may seek water from contaminated sources; diseases like cholera are more likely to spread due to lack of clean water and due to lack of hygiene. Often in countries such as Ghana, the poorer population do not have access to running water in their homes and therefore have to walk long distances to collect water; this also highlights a poor quality of life. Due to high water costs, countries such as these are unable to use water for luxury purposes e.g. dishwashers and therefore water wastage is less likely.
Second, bottled water is harmful for human being and the environment according to the Environment Working Group. Bottled water is costly and wasteful, but this does not stop people around the world and especially those living in developed country to be addicted of bottled water. The typical cost for tap water is $0.0015/gallon while a gallon of bottled water at prices ranging from $0.89 to $8.26 per gallon. The big difference in cost does not encourage me to drink bottle water because Water is a gift from our nature I do not think that the bottled water industry has the right to sell water in a such a high price since the only thing that they do on it is to filter it and put it in plastic bottle. According to EWG, people believe that the taste that taps water has meant that tap water is bad that is why the run to bottles water despite his cost.
In the case of pollution and carbon emissions, it is very hard to actually measure the level of carbon emissions being produced from a company. And even if you can it will be very costly, which means there is an opportunity cost of implimenting the law of how much carbon emissions can be produced. Realistically, all regulation can hope to achieve is a reduction in environmental damage and a movement towards the optimum level of output. A second difficulty with regulation is that the government must have the correct information, and therefore know the optimum level of output. This requires the perfect information which is rarely even achieved.
It’s a necessity for living and can not be over looked. There are many regional conflicts involving water in the Middle East. The Jordan River, being a main water source for many years, has become less useful to the people in the region. Increased diversion of the Jordan and its tributary waters for irrigation purposes by Israel and Jordan utilizes most of the river’s water, expect at flood time, before it reaches the Dead Sea. Thus, both the Jordan River and the Dead Sea are shrinking, leading to serious environmental and economic concerns (Held 32).
Germany faced many problems such as unemployment, debt and lack of money. Construction of Autobahns and schools would have created many jobs and brought in a huge amount of money. This is exactly how Schacht planned to solve Germanys economic problems, with The New Plan. The New Plan consisted of four major parts (Limiting imports, Trade agreements, Government spending and tackling unemployment). However, Hitler was not happy with this as his spending on the military was being limited, which meant only a certain number of tanks/planes were being produced.
If the LEDC had the high enough levels of development it could educate it population and these profit providing process could be taxed and boost the economy of the LDC to allow such infrastructure to grow. With low levels of infrastructure health care is not as available as in MEDC nations. This causes LDC nations to have lower life expectancies and be less productive due to being ill. In Sierra Leone high levels of AIDS/ HIV, approximately 49,000, and outbreaks such as the deadly Ebola Virus means little taxes can be taken as unemployment is high. As a consequence many LDC nations rely on foreign health and economic aid putting them in a situation of unrepayable debt, so even less money can be spent on infrastructure and supporting the economy.
Suzanna Hanafy Country: Colombia Issue: Lack of access to essential drugs September 22, 2012 Policy Statement Countries that are affected with this particular issue are mostly the developing countries. They are affected as they are poor countries and since these drugs are highly expensive they can not afford to purchase these drugs. A few of these countries are Afghanistan, Egypt, Algeria, Albania, Bulgaria and Libya. This affects developed (international countries) because they are expected to increase the amount of medicines to contribute in the solution of this particular problem. However, it is not asked only of the developed countries, it’s also asked of the developing countries to work towards better infrastructure, and a better
Water as one of the most valuable resources of our planet and for us to obtain fresh water source without contamination is complex in many ways. Filtering technologies has always been expensive and ignored by worldwide scientists. In many developing countries being able to receive clean and sanitized water would be a factor in surviving or not. Without further development in more inexpensive filtering technology, third world countries would continue to suffer from constant diarrhea and possibly facing death. Children are often the easiest target due to their low immune system and after drinking contaminated water; their main concern would be survival.
A number of other options are also presented: targeting consumers, DIY or developers. Marketing to consumers alone may be ineffective, as they rely heavily on plumbers to select a product. This approach is also expensive, requiring mass media advertisements in an industry where brand awareness is low. While Triton was successful in building awareness, their sales are mainly in cheap electric segment (Exhibit 3). It’s also unknown how long this took to build.
Another point is that bottled water is no healthier than tap water. People misunderstand that bottled water is clean and pure. However, there are chemicals that are released from the plastic that is a huge problem that most people don’t realize how it can be harmful to their bodies. Can you imagine buying an item for 10,000 more expensive than its original price? However, you are probably making this unreasonable decision almost every day.
