A Great Leader George Washington was a man of exemplary character, charisma, and courage. The United States of America, as argued in Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington by Richard Brookhiser, particularly benefited from his twenty-four years as a national leader. Known as the founding father of the United States, his background in leadership skills rooted from his many years as a general, gaining his strategic skills in the French and Indian war and added in the victory of the Revolutionary war. Washington practiced these skills, as he was the commander in chief of the continental army, president of the constitutional convention, first president of the United States, as well as a father and husband, and many other examples. Idolized as one of the greatest democratic leaders of all time, Washington is known for his internal motivation, balanced empathy, and self-awareness. Brookhiser highlights Washington’s pedestal in political history from a quote from Napoleon, “The wanted me to be another Washington-“ while discussing a loss from Waterloo (Brookhiser 103). As a leader, Washington paved the way for the United States to be the world power it is today. His emotional intelligence is what lead our country to this point. As a leader, Washington practiced the drive to go beyond status to serve and bring commitment to a cause. His internal motivation caused Washington to take responsibilities seriously and show optimism in the face of failure. This transposed into a moral leader of patriotism and honor. An example of his independent drive was recognized when titled as the commander in chief. Not the only one in consideration, he had many positive qualifications for the job including his serious political commitment to the position as he had a long list of leadership positions (Brookhiser 22).
