Was the Treaty of Versailles Unfair on Germany?

The justness of the treaty of Versailles is widely disputed. Some say that the victorious allies were perfectly at liberty to throw the harsh terms of the treaty upon Germany however, there are also those who say that they went too far. One very controversial term of the treaty was the War Guilt. This said that Germany was to accept full blame for the war and had to pay reparations for the costs. People argue that this was just because in the armistice, it was clearly set out that Germany would have to accept war guilt and the German leaders signed this at their own free will. As well as this, the German invasion of Belgium was what pulled the war into one of physical action in the form of man to man fighting rather than political discussions. However, I disagree with this; I think that although the Germans had originally agreed to this, it was not, in truth, the German's fault entirely. For example, many of the countries involved such as Serbia when Serbian gunmen assassinated the archduke Franz Ferdinand. Furthermore, the German people didn’t see themselves as a defeated state, many of them were unaware that they had lost; they thought that a temporary ceasefire had been introduced as there were no foreign soldiers marching down their streets. Secondly, the reparations that were made as part of the war guilt were not only disputed by Germany, but also by America. The original total would have taken Germany until 1984 to pay off and along with the cost of rebuilding their economy, which was not something that they were able to do. However, people argue that Germany had been a lot harsher on Russia in the treaty of Brest-Litovsk which too away 25% of its land, 88% of its coal and a quarter of its population. Furthermore, the damage inflicted on the allied powers by the war was costly, and as Germany had to accept war guilt, it took full responsibility for these
