Study Case “Wal-Mart and bharti: Transforming retail in India.” Introduction Wal-Mart is an American multinational family-owned business retail corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. The company is the world's third largest public corporation, according to the Fortune Global 500 list in 2012. The company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on October 1969, and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. Wal-Mart has 8,500 stores in 15 countries, under 55 different names.i Bharti Airtel Limited, known as Airtel, is an Indian multinational telecommunications services Company headquartered at New Delhi, India. Founded in 1976 by Sunil Bharti Mittal it operates in 20 countries across South Asia, Africa and the Channel Islands. Airtel is the world's third largest mobile telecommunications company with over 261 million subscribers across 20 countries as of August 2012.ii It is the largest cellular service provider in India, with 183.61 million subscribers as of November 2012. Bharti Enterprises is one of the branches and owns various businesses spanning across telecommunications, retail, financial services and manufacturing. In August 2007, Bharti Enterprises tied-up with Wal-Mart for opening a chain of retail stores all over India. The two companies have signed a wholesale cash-and-carry deal. Problem statement The Indian economy is emerging and retail sector is a vast potential for the American company. Bharti was seen as an ideal partner providing access to the Indian market. However, India is posing some challenges making its joint venture challenging. It remains to be seen whether WalMart would be successful in that country.
