O’Brien uses symbolism in this short story to develop Martha as being both a positive and negative figure for Lieutenant Cross. As Martha is being introduced she is right away perceived as a symbol for love, virginity and life after the war for Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. He realizes that she is not a virgin nor is she in love with him, but she was his light at the end of the long, dark tunnel of the war. Every night Lieutenant Cross would hold the letters and “spend the last hour of light pretending. Imagining romantic camping trips into the White Mountains … tasting the envelope flaps, knowing her tongue had been there.” (Pg.
2. What are some key personality features that define you? Some key personality traits that would define me would be that I am always bubbly and happy no matter what is going on in my life. My behavior shows that I will go the extra mile for someone in need and I always try to make everyone happy. Even though I might not please everyone in the long run.
But the thing that was most interesting is that most of the people in this society were incredibly happy, fit and some even smart. The way the government is able to ensure this is also different. They do not control the people via violence or oppression but rather by giving everybody in the society a very linear kind of life. They never have to make any choices that are going to majorly affect their lives. The biggest decision they will ever make is where to go on vacation.
This was a place where my older brother took care of me and my cousin during the summer. It was where we walked the stone wall that surrounded our neighborhood and linked us to other yards and adventures. We learned to balance ourselves along the wall on our daily sojourn, holding our noses to avoid the stench of poisoned rats, stiffening in the sunlight, and who had yet to be picked up and tossed into the trash cans that littered the backyards. We would gather bottles for just a few pennies and buy candy to fill the gap in our hungry stomachs while, we waited for our mom to call us home for lunches of baloney sandwhiches or lima beans and biscuits (I still refuse to eat lima beans to this day, 50 years
There were guides that had weapons them so we could be safe and protects. Really going into and experiencing this part of the world has opened up my eyes to never take anything for granted. Coming home from this trip had made me catch an eye opener and allowed me to openly share my experience with friends and family. In the future, I will definitely plan to go back and volunteer again. Going in a seeing the smile on the children’s faces had brought such joy into my life.

I love hearing about my clients families and learning all the different things about them as service users enjoys hearing tales about my 2 boys. I always try to find a common interest with my clients so that they feel more confident and relaxed when we are having a conversation I feel if they are relaxed and smiling they become more accepting of care as some service users struggle with the aspects of care. I have a service user who is partially blind and deaf and loves hearing tales about my family and what we have been up to at the weekend as she is housebound so unable to go out anymore so she loves hearing stories of what we do. Sometimes she will tell me of places she went to when she was younger in the Lake District and describes what it was like, I then try and go to visit these places with my children so that I can describe it to her and hope she can relive the memories through what I am telling her. I try to take
It’s the best feeling to feel something so grand. Although the school events were all spectacular on their own, I think what had influenced me the most were the little things. Spending time with my friends during breaks, going to school by bus with other students, indulging in endless conversations with both teachers and peers…in their own way, the little things had actually proved to be the things I feel most close to my heart. Each fleeting moment were the steps I took to take me where I am now. Today, with the experienced that I’ve gained from my time at Fukujo, I can face the future with a smile on my face.
