a) Volunteerism refers to the act of offering service to society without the intention of gaining publicity or an income. On average, when persons think of community service, they think of it as 'just completing hours to graduate'. Volunteerism, from my perspective is more than just that. It is a way of helping or giving to one's surroundings. It may involve service to community, service to people in need or service to humanity. When someone donates a handful of time, the difference made is tremendous and it shapes a community for the better while the experience improves the person who donated the time. One is providing an outstanding contribution to the development of the community which essentially creates and nourishes from within a sense of principle and purpose. There are various ways in which the volunteer benefits while giving to society. One benefit for sure is acquiring knowledge about the activity which the individual is participating in. Other benefits include social entrepreneurship, building a solid network of contacts and the development of a community in which one resides. Through volunteerism, one can help to bring a community together. This can be done through hosting fund-raising events or socials for charity or helping a family which has fallen. Volunteerism results in the empowerment of individuals and improvement of communities. Communities are improved in many ways through volunteerism. When we volunteer, we are dedicating our time and talent. Through this, we solve problems, improve lives, connect to others, strengthen communities, get a chance to teach our skills to others, meet new people, builds self-esteem and confidence, transform our own lives and above all, making a difference in someone's life. b) Jamaica is a nation on a mission working towards a certain achievement by the year 2030.
