Name: Vo Nguyen Dang Khoa Student ID: L9917038 Class code: S71206E Topic: Critical response to volunteering in Vietnam Volunteer work and individual responsibility result from humaneness and patriotism. In many countries, this attitude is taught throughout school years and over generations. Pham Phuong Thao, in the article “Students – Helps Our Country! ” (2011) posted on Community Action Blogspot, is in favor of volunteering and asserts that volunteering should be compulsory for Vietnamese students. However, Andy Nguyen, in the article “Students Deserve Choice” (2011) replied on Community Action Blogspot, argues that forcing students to do volunteer work is not an effective way. This essay will critically respond to both authors’ ideas. Firstly, in favor of volunteering, Pham Phuong Thao avers that volunteering should be a requirement for all Vietnamese students could provide more manpower than the volunteer workforce to help people across the country. Whereas, Andy Nguyen argues that students should spend more time on study instead of become volunteers, which may cause a distraction. Secondly, while Pham Phuong Thao continues to clarify this proposal will help students in their future careers due to variety of benefits including building character and practical life skills, Andy Nguyen points out forcing unwilling students to volunteer it can make the work less effective. Pham Phuong Thao’s ideas deserve attention when she declares that students, who are volunteers, will benefit to their future careers. For example, students, who aim to become teachers or doctors, are likely to join in volunteer campaigns. Students will learn experiences, which might be the priority in their future careers. Students should come to rural areas to help people, who live in poor conditions and low standard of living and do not have any opportunity to go to school or
