The Volleyball match I chose to write about was that of Penn state Vs California 2007 Volleyball Semis. What attracted me most towards choosing this video was that ESPN was covering the matches, meaning it must be at a professional level that the game was being played. What I noticed about the match was that these girls ranged from 5’7 to 6’2 in height yet even the shortest girls seemed liked giants when they jumped to spike the ball or to do their jumping serves. Do not be fooled, if one was to simply tell another “I am watching a women volleyball tournament” the other person might have this vision of soft playing barbie dolls, but in reality these women are very strong physically and as competitive as the NFL. The strike to the ball could be heard all around the court as soon as the the players hit it. The best part to me was the communication within the team, these girls weren’t selfish players whom simply wanted to score a point, they were helpful to one another thinking about the overall win of the game. When the players called the ball as “Mine, Got it” the other players would back off and let them hit it not intervening unlike in our volleyball class where some people call the ball but then get timid and expect another player to hit it. Other things I noticed where the tricks used by the players; such as jumping high and raising the arm all the way back as if about to hit it with tremendous force but instead the player simply taps or tips the ball over to the other side causing the team to step back expecting a larger hit and being disappointed when the small tap touches the floor. At this professional level of Volley their is not as much “Aces” as their is in our class because these players are focused and with the mentality of “head in the game”. I have really enjoyed this class and all I have learned. I am not a professional, (yet) but I do enjoy the sport
