Reflection Paper On Volleyball

Volleyball is a challenging, difficult, mental, and physical sport that requires commitment and teamwork. My barrier is to not look in the mirror and see and 11-year old girl without any responsibility, but to see a hardworking athlete that can take on anything. This is the barrier I have overcome, and must always deal with. Am I too young? This is what I thought at the age of nine, when I entered club volleyball. I entered the world of competitive volleyball almost two years too young. At first, I thought I was fantastic for going into the club of Phoenix North Valley a year or two younger than everyone else, but then I saw I wasn’t as strong as many other girls. They were tall, strong, and 12! I began to think that this was all too much! Even at the young age of nine, I was in many extra activities. In fourth grade, I was in volleyball, band, student council, dance, and of course – SCHOOL! It was extremely hard to focus on volleyball one hundred percent. I conned myself into thinking this because I was the tiniest girl on my team. I believed that serving over-hand was all physical, but I know now that you need to use your mind too. I discovered the key to a good serve was having the exact precision of contact when my hand came in contact with the ball. After spending countless hours practicing, I finally got my serve over in a tournament! Finally, I understood that my serve needed to be thought through mentally. To conclude, volleyball will be the sport I adore for all eternity. I now am a setter and play defensive back. I am confident in both of these positions. Volleyball is mental! Having to know when to pass, set, and hit the ball at exactly the right moment is a challenge. In addition, you need to memorize rotations, a huge task. Volleyball is the barrier I have overcome.
