Ashley Clement Professor Stephanie August 5, 2012 Research Paper Draft It’s Better To Burn Out Then Fade Away Alternative rock/grunge music was changed in the early 90’s when the infamous Kurt Cobain got together with Krist Novoselic to create the band Nirvana. “Few bands in rock history have had a more immediate and tangible impact on their contemporary pop musical landscape than Nirvana did in the early Nineties” (Rolling Stones). Nirvana’s distinct sound helped inspire many bands and artists in the 90’s and changed the history of rock forever. Although the band was only around for several years due to addiction and metal anguish the impact they had in such a short period of time is thrilling and undeniable. It all started in 1987 in Aberdeen Washington, when vocalist/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic got together.
Shortly after Christmas 2001, will.i.am created a loop and a guitar part that he liked. The rest of the band members heard the track and wrote similar lyrics over it. Justin Timberlake also heard the track and immediately came up with the words “where is the love” and wrote and chorus.
While all the protest was going on, rock music was definitely not standing by idly watching what it had started. It was in their with the people. Artists such as Jimi Hendrix, a poor part African American, part Cherokee from a broken home in Seattle, were reflecting the desperate mood of late 1960’s youth through a harsh yet psychedelic rock. In 1966 Hendrix formed the “Jimi Hendrix Experience and amazed young European audiences with a wild act modeled after former employers such as Little Richard and James Brown. After achieving some fame in the United Kingdom Hendrix came to the United States and delivered a loud, angry electric blues rock that captured the violence of the war torn era.

When compared to the other rap hits of the time, Run DMC's sound was very unique in the sound of the beats and the skillful, push it to the limit vocals. By the mid 80's, Simmons had founded the hip hop record label Def Jam, and Run DMC became the most powerful group in hip hop. Run DMC then started to experiment mixing their sound with samples of heavy metal guitars, basically combining the sound of each genre to create a gritty, street savvy sound. Run DMC's success showed the rest of the hip hop world that success could be achieved by delivering constant new material that challenged the status-quo with unique sounds and challenging lyrics. Their 1986 album Raising Hell was preceded by the top ten hit “My Adidas”, and then the release of a cover of Aerosmith's “Walk This Way”, off the same album, became the groups biggest commercial hit.
Punk Rock Punk rock is a genre of rock music starting out in mid 1970’s, mainly around USA, UK and Australia. Punk is known for its fast guitar chords and drumming and angry rebellious lyrics. Their influences started out in the 60’s with harder rock bands like MC5, The Who, and The Kinks. These early rock bands played heavier rock and roll music as seen in song like ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘I Can’t Explain’ and ‘My Generation’. These songs had heavy guitar chords and, ‘My Generation’ in particular, its lyrical subject being about the youth of their day and rebellion.
Kemker 1 Benjamin Kemker English 2201-006 Ms. Maiti 19 October 2012 “Thick as a Brick” Jethro Tull’s 1972 single track self-titled album “Thick as a Brick” is an example of how political satire of one age can carry over to another. Ironically, one of the song’s themes is history repeating itself which is the appeal the song has to those willing to listen. At the time of its writing, front man Ian Anderson set out to do something completely different from the other big names in music. Dave Morris states in his essay: It is somewhat difficult to define exactly what the “concept” of Thick as a Brick is; it is not an attack on the evils of capitalistic society like Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, nor is it an exploration of artistic awakening and the role of the artist in society, like The Who’s Tommy. It can be seen more as an artistic attack on nearly everything in mainstream society, including attitudes toward children, art, war, and general materialism.

The original pop-punk bands would be The Ramones or The Lonely Ones but these bands were more punk but they started the change within the genre. The pop-punk genre over the next 20+ years continued to change and as result was looked down on by many criticizing it by referring to it as “mall-punk”, “popcore”, despite this it wasn’t until the start of the nineties that pop-punk was considered a real subgenre and it was at this time the real icons of this genre began to emerge. Bands such as, Papa Roach, Jimmy Eat World, AAR, Blink-182, Green Day, SR-71, Sum 41, The Offspring, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, and my personal favourite Less Than Jake and many, many more. The last three bands though belong to a popular sub genre of pop-punk; ska- punk. However, despite these bands belonging to a previous generation of music their popularity is still as high as ever.
