Visual Kei and Gothic Lolita. The whole history and culture of Japan always exited me in any manifestations even including the language. The movement I decided to choose to write about, which has a hard influence on my creative work as well as on my whole life-style is a modern Japanese fashion for young people. It is a very wide area to look at and it includes a range of different currents which are nowadays popular not only in Japan, but also in many countries abroad. There are some of them which have an exceptionally strong association with the definition “Japanese fashion” to many people. For instance the most popular trends which came from Japan are Gothic Lolita, Gyaru (Japanese transliteration of word “gal”), cosplay (costume play), and Visual Kei. Each one of those trends consists of many styles which have significant distinctions in them, but for this essay I will be concentrating on Gothic Lolita and Visual Kei trends, which have a more influential prevalence on me. Gothic (and) Lolita style, which may also be considered as another manifestation of costume play, has mainly these Lolita variations: Sweet, Classic, and Punk. I find this combination of two uniquely Japanese-like. The girls who follow this style appear to be like Victorian porcelain dolls come alive and bring a fairy tale amazing atmosphere to the 21st century. The style was popularized by Mana, ex-Malice Mizer who is the owner of the Moi-même-Moitié label and is widely associated with him. I found Mana an exceptional designer and musician with unique imagination. The other famous designers and brands in this area are BABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT and Mary Magdalene. Gothic Lolita can be seen as a main character in the movie
