VISUAL IMPAIRMENT Throughout many people’s lives some sort of visual impairment will be a factor to deal with at one time or another and can be fixed by wearing glasses, contacts or the use of a magnifying glass to help see. There are many different types of visual impairments that affect a person’s ability to learn and or accomplish goals at the same rate as their peers. Visual impairments are that much more severe and in depth than corrective lenses ability to fix. Visual Impairments deal with parts of the brain or eye that are damaged where in fact all of or a majority of the person’s ability to see is affected and causes that individual not be able to accomplish school work and also requires IEP goals in order to reach certain standards each school year. Unfortunately visual impairment is extremely prevalent in the United States alone totaling around ten million people country wide. All of these ten million people with different degrees of visual impairment still need to receive an education and a productive means of accomplishing those goals needs to be found and used more effectively and more often to maintain inclusion and equality in the class room. In order to accommodate to a student with a visual impairment the classroom teacher needs to know the needs of the student and how to administer the remedy to these needs and exactly how the student is impacted by these resources in order for optimal learning experiences. On page 386 if Marilyn Friends text book she describes the plan of action a teacher should take in order to teach a visually impaired student. A few examples that she uses are that all educational materials are written in large print, available in braille and have sound recordings.
