Violence on TV By Thomas Elmendorf In the article, “Violence on TV” by Thomas Elmendorf in the EBSCO Host Publishing, he discusses the effects of media violence on children. The author has provided several different studies and researches in order to prove his point that viewing violence on media renders a negative effect on the minds of children. According to a research, an average American child spends more time in watching Television than he spends in school and in this time period he can view many violent and aggressive acts. The author points out the increasing violence and crimes in our surroundings and asserts that these crimes are actually a direct result of media violence. Author provides some facts and figures to show us that the crime rate of young Americans (ages 15 to 24) has increased. 20 to 24 is the age group that is most involved in arrests and victims. The author puts the blame directly on the media for showing violence on TV. According to him, there is a direct relationship between televised violence and the anti-social or aggressive behavior of young people. He points out the evidence from many reports done by renowned scientists that viewing violence on TV causes an increase in aggressive behavior. The critics however degrade the reports by saying that it affects only those already aggressive individuals but the author is of the point of view that violence should still be censored even if it affects the already-aggressive people because it makes those people even more aggressive than they are. According to some reports highlighted by the writer, media violence not only reduces the child’s natural inhibition against aggressive manner but they also would copy what they’ll see. The child won’t necessarily attack the first person he sees after watching a violent act but that act can rest in his mind for a long period of time and he can react
