Violence in our society. Violence is one of the common factors that continues to escalate in our society, especially in developing countries. The rate of violence now is a lot more than it was 20 years ago. Every day, the newscasts and newspapers are full of stories about drive-by shootings, gang attacks, murders, and knifings. A man cannot walk on the street without looking over his shoulder because of the fear of assault. Violence is an unwarranted exertion of force or power, as against rights and laws that can take different forms. Some of these forms are: physical, mental, social, economic, political, religious and so on. Violence ranges from superficial bruises to outright destruction. Violence continues to increase in our society due to political, economic and religious reasons. First and foremost, political refers to exercising or seeking power in governmental or public affairs of a state. Violence tends to escalate when leaders seek more power. Some leaders, mostly in African countries, exercise power not only more than they are delegated to but also more than their required term of leadership. For instance, since 1980, when Zimbabwe gained its independence, President Robert Mugabe has been in power. During the elections, Robert Mugabe rigs the votes through manipulation and bribery. Oppositions are oppressed and killed leading to violence in the society. Zimbabwe has been sanctioned by the European Union leading to no investment in and out of the country, inflation on goods and services, and migration to the neighboring states. Similarly, Egypt suffered the same political violence during the time of Hosni Mubarak, who was recently deposed by the jury of the people.
