Vasco Da Gama Did you know that explorers or travellers were really important? Especially during the Age of Exploration? Without them, we would not live the life we are living. One of the most famous and important explorers of all time is Vasco Da Gama. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer, well known for his first voyage when he discovered a trade route to India through Africa, which caused several impacts on the world in that period. As Vasco Da Gama’s father was an explorer, he was already oriented on navigation during his early life: becoming an explorer was his destiny. The Portuguese explorer was born in 1460 in Sines, Portugal. He naturally followed in his father's footsteps: he learnt Math and Navigation. Moreover he studied under the astronomer Abraham Zacuto. Later, he served in the court of King Joao II and as a navel officer. He finally died in 1524 during his second voyage in India. Indian spices were very popular in Europe; however, the only way to travel from Europe to India was a long and expensive trip over land. Therefore, Vasco Da Gama was appointed by King Manuel I to command the first Portuguese expedition. The goal was to discover a sailing route to India, even though there were many people who thought that it was impossible. Thus, he left Lisbon on 8 July 1497 with 170 men and four ships, the São Gabriel commanded by himself, the São Rafael commanded by his brother, the caravel Berrio commanded by Nicolau Coelho and a fourth ship unnamed and used for storage. In November 22, the expedition rounded the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope (discovered by the explorer Bartolemeu Dias in 1487). Afterwards, he sailed north and made various stops along the coast of Africa in trading centers such as Mombasa, Mozambique, Malindi, Kenya and Qilmana.
