An approach of literary criticism, based on the economic and political theories of Karl Marx, that interprets a literary work as both a reflection and a product of economic conflict between the social classes. The basic assumption of Marxist criticism is that those who control a society's economy also control or largely influence its cultural and intellectual products. Traditional Marxist critics such as Gyorgy Lukacs and Lucien Goldman, study the relationship between historical epochs and the rise and fall of certain literary forms[1]

Marxist criticism analyses literature in terms of the historical conditions which produce it. Marxism is a scientific theory of human societies and of the practice of transforming them and what that means, rather more concretely, is that narrative Marxism has to deliver is the story of the struggles of men and woman to free themselves from certain forms of exploitation and oppression. Also Marxism has always claimed to be a revolutionary science. There is nothing academic about those struggles, and we forget this at our cost. Marxist criticism is part of a larger body of theoretical analysis which aims to understand ideologies, the ideas, values and feelings by which men experience their societies at various times.
