1518 - First boatload of slaves brought directly from Africa to the Americas Cause: Europeans accustomed to slavery were coming to the Americas. Effects: Slavery helped owners gain wealth and property. The United States grew and slavery eventually became a necessity for the Southern Plantation owners. Driven by humanitarian and economic reasons the country became divided and erupted into Civil War. Significance: Slavery brought Africans to America, challenged this country to look at all men as equals and made us leaders in the world for civil rights of mankind.
‘The American Revolution and the Irony of Slavery’ The American Revolution redefined economic, political and religious freedom in colonial America and around the world. Americans of the revolutionary generation were preoccupied with the social conditions of freedom. The contradiction between freedom and slavery seem so apparent that it makes it difficult to understand the obstacles to abolition. During the revolutionary era slavery became the focus of international debate for the first time in world history. The United States changed dramatically in a very short time after the Revolution, the transition was not an easy one, militarily, politically, and culturally.
For many years there has been a debate on whether or not yellow-journalism was a cause of the Spanish-American war. Some historians argue that it had a major impact in sparking the war. They argue newspapers like the New York Journal took advantage of their popularity to incite public opinion and force then President McKinley to act against Spain on behalf of Cuba, which had been under Spanish control since 1511. Other historians disagree and say though the newspapers did report on the events leading up to the war and tended to only publish stories that showed the good side of Cuba, the constant violation by Spain of the interests of the United States in the Caribbean and the United States need to expand their power could be seen as the true causes of the war. In Citizen Hearst: A Biography of William Randolph Hearst, journalist W. A. Swanberg argues that newspaper moguls such as William Randolph Hearst of the popular New York Journal, used it to arouse public opinion in such a way it forced President McKinley to wage war against Spain to free Cuba.1 How could newspapers cause such tremendous action?
America`s role as world policeman Since the United States of America gained the right to form their own nation, as a result to winning the war of independence, they considered themselves as the protector of freedom and democracy. Those beliefs grew stronger and later became the main reason as to why they started meddling into the rest of the worlds business after a long period of isolating themselves from European conflicts. During the 1800’s the US tried to isolated themselves from being involved with the European imperialistic politics. However, it was inevitable since their interests clashed as they grew bigger. An American Empire The ancient, rather generic definition of imperialism has evolved since its introduction by the Persians, Athenians, Macedonians, and Romans. United States & The World In the past three days in American Studies we have been studying about imperialism, which is the domination of a strong nation over weaker nations. For example when the U.S invaded Hawaii and Cuba because they wanted what they had. Building a large navy and becoming a world power was something the U.S wanted to do and become. Annexing Hawaii occurred in the late 1800’s when the U.S. took Hawaii from England. As trade with China and Japan grew Americans became interested in Hawaii and wanted it.
Cuba, a Spanish colony, had been in rebellion since 1895. The brutal Spanish response turned American sympathies to the Cuban insurgents. The US Battleship Maine arrived in Havanna Harbor in January 1898 with a dual mission to protect American interests and present the Spanish with a show of force. At 9:40 PM on the evening of February 15, an explosion ripped the forward hull quickly sending the ship to the bottom of the harbor, killing two hundred sixty-six of the 345 crew members. To make matter worst, Portugal who first introduce african slave migrations in New Espanola expanded slavery trade around the globe into brazil who needed worker in their sugar fields. The introduction of slavery reduced the other labor forces; nevertheless, it didn't really work in all the Americas. For example, Mexico and Peru who had incorporated slaves as primary agricultural labor force had a less common slavery rate than Portugal/Spain did in Cuba and Portugal in Brazil.
