The United Nations has been a big part of maintaining relations amongst countries in the world. The world struggles because of conflicts between countries everyday. The United Nations does what mothers do at home, which is keeping children in order. It is their duty to keep them in place and maintain world peace by taking care of international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace. There were times that the United Nations did an amazing job; however, there were also times that the rest of the world criticized some of things that they had done. Over the 60 years that they have been around, they had to deal with many different cases throughout the world and made it to the place that we live in right now. If it was not for the United Nations, I do not think that we would have made it this far without war breaking out throughout the world everyday.
What is the history behind this important organization? How did they become a powerhouse that takes care of the relationships amongst different countries? First of all, the name "United Nations” was given by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" on January 1, 1942. This was during World War II, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers. The Axis powers were those countries that were opposed to the Allies during World War II. The three major Axis powers were Germany, Italy, and Japan.
States first established international organizations to cooperate on specific matters. The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, and the Universal Postal Union was established in 1874. They were platforms for the United Nations and now both the International Telegraph Union and the Universal Postal Union used as specialized agencies.
