If a service user needs to lip read, it is important that there is adequate lighting; a dimly lit room would make it difficult for them to see the movement of the lips. It is also important that the person who is speaking does so in a normal manner. Very often, when people are speaking to a deaf person, they either shout or speak very slowly and over emphasise the words. Shouting at a deaf person will make no difference, they will still not be able to hear what is being said and they will get frustrated. Speaking very slowly and over emphasising words will inhibit communication as the lip movements will be distorted, making it difficult for the deaf person to lip
Communication needs to clear and person centred as this will help build and maintain a healthy and balanced relationship between support worker and resident, without this basic skill the relationship will be severely hindered from the start. Good communication skills are also vital between staff members and also external parties (Doctors, Care Co-ordinators, relatives, etc) This helps to maintain a good working relationship between all parties and helps things run smoothly 2.1 Finding a way of communicating with an individual is essential so that you can ascertain their needs, preferences and wishes. Care Plans are a useful tool to help locate any information regarding on how an individual communicates, other ways to establish the communication needs are by observing the individual, asking the individual, and seeking information from others who may know the individual well. 2.2 T o estabish. 2.3 There are two different types of communication, Verbal communication and Non Verbal communication.
· 28/06/2013 – Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, with agincare. · 08/2014 – Currently doing my NVQ 3 in health and social care. Work Experience April 2012 – Present Agincourt Care Home, Dorchester Road, Weymouth, DT4 7LG. Care Assistant: I have gained considerable experience within my job role, for example keeping records, understanding the principles of health care and hygiene, helping clients with personal care, domestic cleaning and working as part of a team with resident’s family members and co-workers. I have also had the opportunity to step in as a senior member of staff, which involved: running of the shift, giving clear and simple instructions to co-workers, medication administration, managing well in incidences where the fire alarms have sounded, dealing with emergency services when needed including doctors and nurses.
By ensuring that I am on same level by sitting down, and by speaking slowly, clearly and calmly, I can ensure that the individual is comfortable and happy to talk to me. If they speak a different language or use sign language, I can organise a translator (not an interpreter – exact translation required NOT an interpretation of what the client has said) or a signer. An individual may also decide to use a form of communication that is not based on a formal language system due to maybe a lack of trust in a new carer, or they may have a speech impediment or education issue, so in these cases, using pictures on a computer screen of items being discussed like food; furniture; clothing or pets etc.
Reflection – Handover During my time on placement so far I have encountered the handover of patients between nurses coming on and off duty every single day. The purpose of this essay is to reflect on this event. The purpose of reflection is to promote desirable pactise though the practitioners understanding and learning about his/her lived experiences (John 1995). I have decided to use the first handover that I saw being given for this reflection. It was my first placement on a rehabilitation and palliative care ward.
Any contact we have with professional bodies is written in our incoming and outgoing monitor book; care plans are updated on a regular basis and implemented with any other suggestions from social workers, doctors, nurses etc. Communication is an essential part of the services users and the care we provide. Service users can be at risk if communication is not adhered to, they could deteriorate due to lack of communication or because the support worker is in a rush and is to busy to listen. Service user’s needs must always be met, communication is essential for the care to be carried out. We have senior meetings every month followed by staff meetings for all.
For all the topic that we have from Chapter 1 to Chapter 15, I can say that my best interest here is Dementia and Alzheimer. I learned a lot from that chapter on how it’s developed and starts and at what age. Also, the symptoms and causes of dementia are explained here in the text. It really helps a lot for me this topic because I can apply this to my daily life at work. I work with the dementia patients, so from what I read I gained more knowledge, like how I deal or taking care of dementia patient, and how this develops.
Running head: GERONTOLOGY AIDE FINAL PAPER Sharlee Walker HHS 435 Instructor Analeah Green June 24,2013 FINAL PAPER The occupation that I have chosen to write about is Gerontology Aide. I really want to work with elderly people and other people that need care. I want to be able to help people when they can’t help themselves. I don’t want to just sit behind a desk and listen to what is bothering my client or pushing papers. There are a lot of elderly people out there that need someone to help them and be there to listen to them because they don’t have anyone else.
Next will be the discussion regarding the responsibilities of administrators and how to address employee problems. Finally, the essay will end on possible resolutions to confidentiality problems to limit future issues. Affected Population While exploring the concept of patient confidentiality, there are many individuals who are affected all across the country, particularly anyone in the health care field. The most notable are patients but physicians and health care employees run a close second mainly because they are handling patient files. Patient confidentiality includes any information such as test results, treatments, diagnoses, and personal information like name, age, and SS#s.
