Unit 8 Assignment PS370: Health Psychology Kaplan University November 17, 2014 Professor Communication, Health, and Treatment When an individual is completely healthy they are said to have a complete state of social, physical, and mental well-being (Straub, 2014). The basic model that focuses on promoting health and preventing disease is the biopsychosocial model. In short, this model makes its foundation on the fact that all behaviors are explained by using three specific contexts: biological processes, psychological processes, and social influences (Straub, 2014). Pertaining to addiction, the biological aspect of this model includes genetics, physiological, and neurochemical factors that influence an individual’s needs for medical attention (Masiak, 2013). The psychological aspect includes an individual’s perception of events, emotions, emotional development, and psychopathological problems (Straub, 2014 & Masiak, 2013). Finally, the social aspect of this widely used model includes an individual’s social support systems, such as family and peers, social justice, and multicultural issues, which may lead to or help prevent self-destructive behaviors (Straub, 2014 & Masiak, 2013). Using the model I briefly discussed above, I will show how the biopsychosocial model is used in the treatment process of an individual. I have reviewed the case study of a man named John, and with it I will attempt to explain the systematic process that has contributed to my client’s unhealthy habits, evaluate the mind-body connection between John and his health, prioritize his needs, evaluate a plan to treat his needs, and create a treatment plan for him with achievable goals.
