Unit 601 Develop and Implement the Health and Safety Policy Introduction and background of organisation – Yew Tree Dairy Yew Tree Dairy is a family owned company established in 1909. The primary function was one of dairy farmers. This changed 2002 to more of an industrial role and they began to produce finished product. Obviously, the change in process brought along problems of: • Employees • Machinery • Customers • Neighbouring properties The above list is by no means exhaustive and presented a number of challenging hurdles for the owners to negotiate. The site occupied previous to 2012 was, as stated above, a farm. When I was approached to work with them by Carl Woodcock MD and general manager, it was primarily to review and overhaul their current procedures and documentation with regards health & safety provision. This was mainly necessitated, unfortunately and tragically, due to a fatality on site early in 2012. It soon became clear that there was a clear lack of provision with regards health, safety and welfare. The current health and safety policy, at that time, was of a generic nature provided by an external company (See evidence 019). This policy fell short on many levels. It did not clearly set out the structure or provision of the company with regards provision. Following a HSE initial visit it was advised that the provision with regards health and safety needed to be completely re visited and implemented. The company re located to a purpose built industrial premises during October 2012. The premises are situated on Pimbo Industrial Estate Skelmersdale Merseyside. I was involved in the planning of the move and the implementation of safety requirements for the set up of the premises (See evidence 047).
