Unit SHC 51 Use and develop systems that promote communication 1. I’m a case worker, working with people suffering from Substance Misuse past or present and who are at different stages of their recovery so I work with a variety of individuals including, colleagues, professionals & management, service users and their families/carers. The project offers those suffering from Drug or Alcohol Addiction a range of services that will be aimed to their individual needs. The centre is open daily and offers a service where service users can come speak to others in Recovery and obtain Information, Advice and Guidance on both the risks of addiction and routes into treatment or recovery so communication is paramount. Communication – Service User Some of our service users have varied degrees of understanding and process information at different levels; this can sometimes cause barriers when communicating, giving information or instruction. There are a number of methods to overcome these barriers, some of which can be to keep summarising and reflecting on what is being said with the service user until they understand what is needed of them, to use non verbal gestures, body language, face expressions, lip reading, and colour coding, visual, pictorial, written & reading to the service user, hearing loop, and interrupter were possible. I have use the hearing loops system in the past in retail and the customer found this quite helpful; I use written communication and reading to the service users often here at Community Recovery Service especially when going though their paperwork, action plans and when signing consent this is the best way of communication. If or when I have had any service user who may need any of the above methods of communication I make sure I put in place the most appropriate communication pathway in place for that person and make sure all staff are
