The term ‘abuse’ covers a wide aspect of things and can be sub categorised, examples of this are; Physical abuse is when someone makes physical contact with another with the intention of causing injuries, pain, bodily harm and suffering. Examples of this are; unnecessary or incorrect restraints, hitting someone, slapping someone, pushing someone, kicking someone. Sexual abuse is when a person forces contact upon another in the form of inappropriate sexual behaviours thus forcing them to do something sexual that they don’t want to, examples of this are; unwanted kissing or touching, rape and/or the attempt of rape, sexual contact with someone that is otherwise unable to consensually agree to it. Emotional/psychological abuse is when someone becomes threatening towards another; examples are humiliation, intimidation, verbal abuse, criticising someone excessively or not necessary, threats to stop people seeing their loved ones/family and threatening to stop high preference activities when there’s no grounds to do so. Financial abuse could be the taking of monies whether it be fraudulently or thieving from them, financial exploitation, denying access to money when wanting to make a purchase, gaining access to money without the persons permission, using the other persons money or financial status for your own benefit. Institutional abuse is the mistreatment of individuals caused by inadequate or poor support or care setting, and/or systematic poor practices which have a detrimental effect on the care setting in its entirety. An example of when it can occur is when the individual’s needs or wishes are sacrificed in order to ensure the seamless running of a service or organisation, it can also be caused by the inadequate training or experience of staff, staff being poorly supervised, lack of support by company superiors and poor communication between staff.
