Denise Meloche 4222-324 Support Individuals with Specific communication needs 1. Understand specific communication needs and factors affecting them. 1.1 It is important to meet the individual’s communication needs so; • they can be informed and therefore make informed choices • express their feelings and views • be alerted to danger • interact socially • be involved with everyday activities • understand what is going on around them • learn 1.2 My role and practice can impact on communication with an individual with specific communication needs by giving them the opportunities for all of the above. If I fail to communicate according to their need, they may become more isolated and withdrawn. I endeavour to find ways to support communication using variety of methods.
2. As a carer it is your responsibility to support service users to express themselves. The way in which you can achieve this is by assessing their needs, access information regarding their communication needs, providing the appropriate support, aids or equipment, encouraging and motivating communication, working with others and by monitoring the effectiveness of that support. Without the appropriate support the individual would be unable to express their needs or how they are feeling which can lead to both emotional and physical difficulties. By fully supporting service users with specific communication needs you are able to support their rights.
Unit 4222-324 (HSC 3029) Outcome 1, 1. Explain the importance of meeting an individual's communication needs. The importance of meeting somebodies communication needs is because if they cannot communicate effectively then you can understand what they are trying to express. Different people have different communication methods or methods that they prefer to use, so we should support them when using their preferred method of communication. Without communication people cannot express their needs or wants, so therefore it is a basic human right.
If unable to communicate service users would be denied this right. In my role as a volunteer I must communicate effectively with all manner of individuals and I have to be aware of how my non verbal communication can be off putting to some individuals. For example, my height can intimidate, my accent can be misinterpreted as aggressive/authoritarian, my tattoos and clothing could be seen as a comfort to someone who identifies with that fashion. All of these issues can impact on communication with an individual who has specific communication needs. By ensuring that I am on same level by sitting down, and by speaking slowly, clearly and calmly, I can ensure that the individual is comfortable and happy to talk to me.
We have many reasons of communicating with each other, and these are to express ourselves as well as to pass on information and knowledge. Effective communication involves verbal and non-verbal interaction. P1 Both of these communication methods can be expressed through skills such as: * Tone and volume of voice * Body language- Posture * Facial expressions * The use of touch * Clarifying * Questioning This involves the way our tone interprets what you say and what influence it has on the receiver. Depending on what we say, we should know 'how' to say it. For example, if you talk very slow and in a low voice, people may consider you to be shy, embarrassed, not confident and unsure.
The best way for me to establish the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual is to first off all look in the care plan as client’s wishes are often stated. I would ask the individual if the communication method being used is effective. I would also try out different methods to see which one gives the best result and the one which the individual is more comfortable and confident using. 4. Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication (2.2.2) There are different factors to consider when promoting effective communication.
Explain how own role can impact on the dynamics of two way communication with individuals with sensory loss Be prepared to repeat what you say ? orally, in writing, [ or using multiple formats - to communicate with the person. Offer assistance in understanding written instructions and in completing forms or documents. Provide extra time for decision-making. Be patient, flexible,
SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS WITH SPECIFIC COMMUNICATION NEEDS TASK C It is crucial for a support worker to be aware and take the matter carefully, because the capability to make decisions among individuals is different. it may looks quite simple to think that people with mental impairment, physical illness or people how have got language barriers, may have affect their capabilities to express agreement. A professional carer will understand how to work sensitively with service user individually and design goals to achieve successful outcomes. The mental capacity act clearly defines that every adult has the right to make their own decisions. It must be assumed that they have the capacity to do so, unless it has been proven otherwise.
It influences social care work, because when we are caring for someone we have to be able to recognise that everybody is different and we must not impose our preferences to them. The personal beliefs should be respected and encouraged. Choice We need to be aware that each service user has the right to make choices and also how they can benefit from this. It is important both physically and mentally for a service user to make choices each day. It has an influence on social care work, because we need to make sure that we are communicating well, and listening to the individual's wishes and preferences, and we need to remember not to dothings without discussing it with service user.
Communication 2.1 Compare ways to establish the communication and language needs,wishes and preferences of an individual. You need to be clear of there needs, ask them personally, ask the family members or the key workers, read their files, you will benefit from any information, there may be drawbacks if you come across any barriers, and you may need to find other means, i.e translators e.t.c. 2.2 Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication. Make sure you speak clearly and pronounce your words, and check the tone and pitch of your voice , you don’t always need to shout. Use the correct language, take time to say things, speaking quickly can cause confusion.
