Equality and inclusion 1.1 Explain what is meant by: 1.1a- Diversity Diversity means variety, assortment, range, mixture. It is difference. Diversity refers to the wide range of attributes, backgrounds, and skills that are in society. Diversity recognises that although people have things in common, they are also different and unique in many ways and it is about recognising and valuing those differences. Diversity consists of both visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as; background, culture, personality and work style and also the protected characteristics such as gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, religion and belief and age.
Diversity is about recognising differences and valuing the differences. It consist of visible and none visible factors which include the characteristics of a person such as their background, culture personality. In addition to the characteristics that are protected under the discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation and age by recognising and understanding that everyone has the right to be treated as a individual and encouraging individuals to express their individuality freely if they wish everyone who is cared for in your setting will feel valued as a individual. Equality is about creating a fairer society where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential this is stated in the department of health 2004. Equality also means being equal no matter what you race, gender, age, disability, religion, cultural differences and sexual orientation.
Diversity is about recognising and valuing everyone’s culture, personality, age, race, sex, disability, gender, religion and beliefs. * Equality – treating people in a way that is appropriate for their needs. Making sure people are treated fairly and given fair chances. Recognise their needs and that they are met in different ways. * Inclusion – equal opportunities for everyone whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, to be included.
By understanding these differences and celebrating them we can create an environment where everybody feels valued. * Equality = Equality is a way of treating every individual in a way that suits their needs without making an example of them or treating them worse than another. People are given equal opportunities allowing them access to the same rights, choices and resources, regardless of their gender, age, race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or cultural background. * Inclusion = Inclusion would mean that everybody would be accepted and included regardless of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious belief or cultural background. Two examples of this are: a solely white group would welcome a black or Asian person into their activities, a wheelchair bound child freely joining in within a dance group with no other physical disabilities.

Example: everyone is treated the same way. INCLUSION - Is to embrace all people regardless of race, gender, age, ability etc. It’s about recognising we are one although we not the same and to have a sense of belonging. Describe how direct or indirect discrimination may occur in the work setting. Direct Discrimination may occur if an employee is not considered for a promotion because of age or a job is refused to a person because of their disability.
I have listed other possible effects below * Long term effects may be: * Loss of motivation * Restricted opportunities * Limited access to services * Long term depression * Increased behavior problems * Difficulty communicating * Lack of education * Lack of achievement The effects listed above are not only ones that affect the individual; they are effects that can be experienced by the individual’s family and friends too. The individual’s family can become isolated from society through trying to protect their family member and will often experience verbal abuse for having a family member that is perceived to be different. Family members can sometimes feel embarrassed about the shame
By recognising and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, and moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued. Equality: Equality means treating people in a way that is appropriate for their needs. Inclusion: whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background. Full d active participation, feeling respected, feeling a sense of belonging, being valued for who you are. 1.2- Indirect Discrimination: Indirect discrimination occurs when policies and practices, which appear neutral or fair because they are applied to everyone, actually disadvantage people and particular groups within society.
This all promotes that everyone is equal but recognising that everyone has difference but should still be treated the same. You can support others to promote diversity, equality and inclusion by encouraging others to embrace difference, rather than rejecting it, just because it is not familiar to you through reducing fear and anxiety, broadening experience, increasing understanding and encouraging collaboration sharing thoughts and ideas with a wide range of people. All this will help support others.
