RANT ON UNIFORMS By Wei-Wen Poon LIKE A BEAST Nearly every student in what is considered a multicultural country, with a blend of varying values and beliefs, is forced into the act of conformity through the demoralising use of uniforms. Uniforms devalue our own teenage social group, and attempt to enforce an image of obedience and cohesion to the school as the figure of authority. Teenagers and young adults in the late 1900s were the main reformists of the time period protesting against authority and the law in strive for a better world, even bringing about the peace movement that ended the war in Vietnam. Many youths tend to challenge the mainstream culture, instead choosing to branch off to many indie groups emphasising their own personal identity through clothing, music and culture. Historically uniforms have portrayed indifference between countries specifically in war, to mark foe from friend which nowadays marks the difference between us and other schools. Not only do we have to put up with a stolen identity but also have to bear its uncomfortable and ugly nature. They say ‘’we are promoting school unity’’ but I believe it is instead robbing us of our own social identity. As a consequence of this the ideals and values of the student is blatantly rejected. In order to promote a fairer and free country we must be rid of uniforms and youth social groups should be considered equal in views and opinions to the older generations. They are representative of the old generation’s idea and values but not of the modern youth who have to wear it. Uniforms have been primarily designed to proudly represent the school as a whole however it completely ignores the student as an individual. The late 1900s was a moment of rapidly growing youth culture with the evolvement of jazz, rock and pop culture but also drugs and sex contraceptives which challenged the dominant attitudes
