Why are most of the UNESCO cultural heritage places located in Europe? Fall 11/15/2013 After World War II in 1945, there was a need to establish an organization of peace to unify countries. The political and economic agreements were not enough to build a lasting peace. Therefore, the emergence of UNESCO came as a response to contribute towards building peace between countries. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It was created in 1945 with the aim of contributing to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration among nations through education culture, science and communication. In addition, the UNESCO has created the World Heritage Convention in 1972 on 16th of November in Paris. The World Heritage Convention came into force in 1975 with the aim of promoting cooperation among nations to protect heritage around the world. The Convention established a list of properties that have outstanding universal value, called the World Heritage List. These sites are part of the cultural and natural heritage of States that are party to the Convention. “The World Heritage List includes 981 sites forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 759 cultural, 193 natural and 29 mixed in in 160 party states. As of September 2012, 190 party states have ratified the World Heritage Convention.” However, the World Heritage Commission has stated in the first article of the convention the following:
