Underachievers to Achievers

In the present world of competition, every individual is making effort to be on top. Steady effort is needed to develop competency. Competency in academic, co-curricular, sports and games are been emphasized. Teachers strive hard to achieve this. Every parent wants to see his/her child perform best. Education system is finding way to attain this state. Students are pressurized to reach this expectation. Development takes place through learning. Systematic approach is been followed to impart knowledge. Urge to know is the driving force to gain knowledge. It is basic desire of human mind. This leads to process of learning. Researches have given new methods to experience learning in a joyful way. Child centered approach has reveled that student involves in learning experience. With all this development and findings, student’s performance is not encouraging. With few students it is found that performance is declining as the student moves to higher classes. Does this mean that teachers are not competent? NO! In a given class both performers and non performers are present. Why some perform and non all? Very few people work to capacity but some children with considerable academic ability fail at subjects in which they should succeed. This is only partly understood and should certainly be a matter of great concern for parents and the education system. Teachers often mistakenly assume that under achievement is a simple problem. This is why one often sees on school reports, stereotyped comments such as ‘Not working hard’, ‘Put more effort’, ‘Lazy’. After all, being lazy and being dumb are the two labels for students with poor grades ever since times immemorial. They are thus often content not to look for alternative explanations.
