Ulysses S. Grant – A Misjudged Leader I choose Ulysses S. Grant, because I think he was a real piece of American history. I hope you learn as I have how important he was, and find the things he has done as interesting as I have. He was a man a lot of people have misunderstood, and have said a lot of different things about his personality, from being a drunk to a horrible leader. I have in fact; found this not to be true. He was the most celebrated, famous, and respected American in his generation. He was basically a simple man, one who was also good at solving problems. He was also very modest and did not feel like he was important. Many thought of his personality as being hard and crude but, those that knew him well thought of him as a gentle and forgiving man, very shy and reserved. Ulysses S. Grant was well known for General and Commander of the union armies during the late years of the American civil war, and the 18th president of the United States. Although many people did not think he was that great of a leader, I found a lot of American history from researching him. It is really unbelievable that Ulysses Grant even survived his army career because of the rumors that surrounded him during the war. To me he had an amazing military career. He was first stationed in Missouri in 1846; this was when America went to war with Mexico. By the end of the war he was promoted to first lieutenant. He continued to serve in the army until 1854, when he decided to retire and buy a farm. This was when there was a lot of speculation about his drinking, which I have found to be just a lot of rumors. The farming did not work out so well for him and he eventually had to sell his farm. He rejoined the military when the civil war broke out in 1861.
