She isn’t the traditional American house wife that watches the children, cook meals, and wash and make clothes for the family. Ma Joad keeps all of her emotions to herself and hates family separation. She is Strong, hopeful, willful, and unbreakable and the most valuable supporter of the family during the period of hard times. Ma Joad as a main Character of the book drives her family into spiritual survival. All characters in The Grapes of Wrath bear moment's of deep self disappointment; however, Ma does not create a chance for them to stumble.
Section 3 Summaries Chapter 24) Minny worries that her friend Aibileen will get in trouble for faking the recommendation to Miss Celia so that she could get a job. Miss Celia does not care though, she values and supports Minny tremendously and would never fire her because of Hilly. In this chapter it is clear that Leroy is physically abusing Minny again, she is however too ashamed to tell anyone about it or ask for help. Celia notices that cuts and offers to call the police but Minny tells her not to worry about it because she doesn’t want anyone to know about it. She tries to hide her pain from Celia and Aibileen so that they do not worry about her.
She cannot sacrifice her children and cannot bear of not being with Robert. Edna's father and husband control her and they feel she has a specific duty as a woman. On chapter eight, she hits a girl called Carly because she called Josie a ‘wog’. Since Carly’s dad was out of control, Josie calls her dad to defend herself since he is a barrister. This definitely makes the barbeque event pretty useless since both of them have broken their promise to keep out of each other’s lives. The eighth chapter gave us an idea that the barbeque even is useless between families; even though Michael has fled eighteen years ago. This event gives us another idea that we have no one better to rely on, than your family.
