Types of Language Language is the method of human communication and there are nearly 7000 types of known living language, including dialect, speech, sign language, mother tongue and slang. Dialect is a form of a language that is spoken in a particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar, and pronunciations. Dialect is also a way of speaking based on geographical or social factors. In another word, dialect exists because of the area of living or because of social class. One of the examples of dialect is Chinese dialect. There are many types of Chinese dialect in China or even in Malaysia. However, Chinese dialects can be roughly classified into several large group which include Mandarin, Hakka, hokien and Cantonese. Next, speech is describe as the faculty or the act of expressing or describing thoughts, feelings or perceptions by the articulation of words. There are 4 basic types of speech. First type of speech is informative speech. An example of this speech is a teacher telling students about earthquakes. Second type of speech is demonstrative speech, the example is “how to write a speech”. Third type of speech is persuasive speech which is to convince people to change in some way, for example, a speech on improve our health through better eating. The last type of speech is entertaining speech. A typical example of an entertaining speech is after-dinner speech. Besides that, sign language is also a type of language. Sign language is a language that uses a system of manual, facial and other body movement as the means of communication. The best example of sign language is the sign language used by deaf people. The next type of language is mother tongue or first language. Mother tongue is the language one learns from one’s mother, and also the speaker’s dominant and home language. For example, my mother tongue is Mandarin. The last type of
