2. Types of interviews in Health communication

2.1 The information sharing interview may be defined as individuals who ask for and give definitive information. The information sharing interview is comprised of two essential types of interviews namely the admission interview and the history taking interview. The admission interview revolves around the transfer of information, generally between administrative health staff and patients. For example when patients are admitted or wanting to consult a health practitioner, information from the patient is required such as their name or previous illnesses, this process is called the admission interview. The history taking interview revolves around the collection of information regarding the patient’s medical history. As an example patients are required to provide information on their hereditary and family background in the event of diseases such as cancer being evident in members of their family, the actual patient’s medical history (e.g. previous surgeries or procedures) and the current state of their health (Faure, C 2008:267, 268).
2.2 An admission interview is crucial in any situation where the patient is seeking a consultation or where they have to be treated. At the abortion clinics staff nurses have to ask all relevant questions such as demographical characteristics, general health (allergies) and financial circumstances (medical aid, employment). The nursing staff must collect this information so that the patients next of kin may be contacted in the event of something going wrong, the patients address for the bill to be forwarded to and for future communication purposes, medical aid details (if applicable) so that the patient may claim back from them after treatment and general health issues so that the health professionals initial approach may be correct.
