Friendship is defined as “the state of being friends”, according to the Oxford English dictionary. Having friends is an important part of life. They come and go as your journey in life continues on. We interact with them everyday, whether it is at school, work, or any other social settings (i.e. gym, bar, restaurants). Friends are people in our lives that share a special bond. It is uncommon that we classify a relationship with someone in this specific way. First, we have the “frenemy” – who you share a love-hate relationship with. Next, is the casual friend – someone you occasionally spend time with. Last, but the most important type of friend, is the best friend – the one person who is always there for you. How are these relationships with different types of friendships described? We will find out how each type of friendship has a different importance. “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”, is the most commonly used quote to describe the relationship with a “frenemy”. To begin, this person is not normally someone you are close with, however you have a mutual circle of friends. This friend is someone that you have a rival with. A friendly competition with this person turned out not so friendly creating this rivalry between the two friends. The presence of this individual is irritating and unwanted majority of the time, you roll your eyes when you hear the voice of this friend entering the room. Between the two of you, you share a mutual feeling of dislike with this friend. Also, they cause irritation and stress when they are around. The “frenemy” is the friend you have to bite your lip and smile because “if you don’t have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all”.
