The mission statement for facebook is probably a good approach to where facebook is now and will be in the future. The key to the situation is through the mission statement for facebook. (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) The mission of “facebook is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” The statement is clear, short and to the point. Whereas, twitters mission statement is “To instantly connect people everywhere to what’s most important to them.” The statement made by twitter is rather vague and generic. Key Issues There is one element of facebook that we are aware of is that it is free to their users and they tract real time conversations like twitter.
Social media is about more than SNS, blogs, wikis, forums, podcasts, or social bookmarking though, it represents a “fundamental change in society, technology and business practices” (Brown, 2010). Human beings have always strived to form connections, groups and allegiances, the arrival of the internet and subsequently web 2.0 has not changed an individual’s basic desire to connect; they have just created a new way to pursue these connections through platforms that are not bound by demographics, geography or politics (Brown, 2010). Social media represents the next evolution in communication and
Social Media has rapidly grown in importance as a forum for political activism in its different forms. Social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube provide new ways to stimulate citizen engagement in political life, where elections and electoral campaigns have a central role. Personal communication via social media brings politicians and parties closer to their potential voters. It allows politicians to communicate faster and reach citizens in a more targeted manner and vice versa, without the intermediate role of mass media. Reactions, feedback, conversations and debates are generated online as well as support and participation for offline events.
Miley Cyrus: The Social Media Movement Today’s world seems to revolve a lot around the use of social media such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Even celebrities use social media to keep fans updated on their recent activities and publicize their lives. In my recent studies I have analyzed celebrity Twitter profile of Miley Cyrus. Cyrus posts primarily consist of shout outs and announcements about her recent works in the music industry, a clear example of how social media can be used for a form of advertisement. An analysis of Mileys profile reveals that she uses her profile to advertise her music and keeps her fans updated of her upcoming music albums.
For example tweets, Facebook, MySpace, and Aim help attract other people to the movement. Sometimes important pictures and videos are uploaded on news websites such as the one about students in California being pepper sprayed. Technology allows people to see how the movement is escalating to a new violent pace or gaining broad based support. This media can be conservative and liberal because there is not a single side. Both political parties and everything in between use the technology.
The Narco movement also heavily relies on the Internet and social media to broadcast their music. Just like Nortec, they are using the Internet as a driving force to reach out to people. Narcocorridos are not seeking to erase the negativity of cartels but instead make the public aware cartels are around and their way of life is not ending anytime soon. Just like U.S. rappers singing about the “hood life” and “brother hood,” the Narcocorridos are doing the same by singing about their way of
“The Internet is the foremost battleground for free speech in the 21st century, and protecting our Internet freedom is essential…” (Save the Internet Coalition, 2013). We, as American’s, have a right to free speech, and free speech on the internet should not be regulated any differently. The internet provides an outlet. It allows people to express their thoughts, opinions, feelings, and views. The internet helps bring people together, allowing us to interact with loved ones across the globe.
Nowhere is this dynamic between organizations and their publics more apparent than on video sharing sites, such as YouTube, that encourage citizens and bloggers to be the co-producers of messages. Just as consumers can use this social medium to create a crisis for a company and interpret an organization’s reputation throughout, so too can an organization use this medium to manage a crisis and improve its reputation. Technology: Helpful or harmful It is without a doubt that technology has revolutionized how people interact with one another. Face to face interaction have turned into phone calls, phone calls have turned into texts. Thanks to social media sites such as instagram, twitter, and Facebook, we have the ability to know exactly what is going on in someone’s life without even having to pickup the phone and having to speak to them. In the article “Breaking down Borders: How Technology Transforms the Private and Public Realms” Samuels observes three individuals in a local Borders café in Loss Angeles. Samuels realizes through his experiment that technology is changing the way we behave in public as opposed to in the past.
The main purpose of social networks is communication. By communication it is meant that people interact, exchange information, and maintain relationships with people whom they care about. Although, some people say that social networks destroy youth, nowadays they are spending their whole day on the internet nurturing their virtual friendships instead of real ones; they are actually complementing their social lives. For example, by using social networks we are able to make new friendships with people from all around the world. We are no longer limited to society that surrounds us and we are able to expand our circle of friends.
