Greek Orthodox Church A friend of mines entire family is Greek Orthodox, mainly her grandfather who is a Greek Orthodox priest, and their religion has always intrigued me. So seeing that this assignment called for experiencing new religions I took this opportunity to attend one of their church services as well as a baptism. Although I am of Greek decent, my family and I are not Greek Orthodox, nor have we ever attended an Orthodox service. Going in to this assignment, I thought knew what the Greek Orthodox religion was; I just assumed it was merely Catholicism but for a different ethnicity. Obviously I was wrong, this religion does have some similar qualities such as communion and the wedding process, but a lot of the details differ.
Christmas in El Salvador is celebrated to commemorate the birth of baby Jesus. The majority of the country’s religion is Roman Catholic. The church plays an important part for El Salvador in the holidays. On Christmas Eve, they go to Misa de Galo “Rooster’s Mass” in Spanish. According to Neil Gaiman, people celebrate this goddess, but do the people who are celebrating know that she is a goddess and not just a Christian holiday. He is questioning the American people to really think about the history of this well-know and highly celebrated holiday. Wednesday challenges Easter to see how many know her as Eostre the goddess of the dawn. She agreed to join after his comment. Easter is a perfect example of how through years things change in
"The History of Christmas" is the story of the origin of Santa Claus and his impact on the world today. St. Nicholas was a wealthy Christian priest and later bishop, who traveled the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents. His gifts were given late at night, so that the gift giver's identity would remain a secret. The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, and his drawing was used in the first Santa ads for the Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising in the 1920s. However, as the years progressed, the Santa advertisement had numerous images by many different artists, including Clement C. Moore's traditional St. Nicholas.
Amish weddings are traditionally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in late fall, after the final autumn harvest. A couple's engagement is usually kept secret until just a few weeks before the wedding when their intentions are "published" in church. The weddings usually take place at the home of the bride's parents with a lengthy ceremony, followed by a huge feast for the invited guests. The bride typically makes a new dress for the wedding, which will then serve as her "good" dress for formal occasions after the wedding. Blue is the typical wedding dress color.
In the sixth grade, when I was eleven years old, every Sunday my mother started taking my sister and me to Holy Name Catholic Church. There, after a couple of months, we had our first holy communion. I hardly paid any attention to the study. I remember my mom told me, “If you stop attending church for your confirmation
The Catholics may have been angry with the church but their church got reform and that’s what they wanted. The Catholic Church had no choice but to sale indulgence that was the pope’s orders and back in that time the Catholics followed the pope. The Catholic Church spent their money on unnecessary things. The church didn’t think wisely, but all of that changed because Martin Luther reformed the church and John Calvin helped. The pope lead the church and decided a person gets into heaven, but William Tyndale believes that if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savoir then you’ll get into heaven, and I believe the same things as Tyndale, you shouldn’t have to prove yourself to the pope that you deserve to go to heaven and the pope shouldn’t get to decide.
The first sign/miracle Jesus performs in changing water into fine wine at a wedding He was invited to in Cana of Galilee. Little is known about the wedding itself. John does not focus on the festivities, the bride, or the wedding guest but he does focus on Jesus and His activity during the wedding festivities. The wine becomes depleted at some time during the festivities. Mary, Jesus’ mother aware of the wine deficit turns to Jesus for help.
Gibbs and Mrs. Webb make breakfast and send their children off to school. Emily Webb and George Gibbs talk after school and we see the first sign that they like each other. Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Gibbs, and Mrs. Soames come back from choir practice and gossip about how Simon Stimson, the choirmaster, is an alcoholic. While this is happening, George and Emily continue talking through their windows to each other. Then Act II starts and it is Emily and George’s wedding day.
Mondays from 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm, the First Parish Church located in Harvard Sq., arranges an open discussion for AA meetings. My cousin Randa and I attended this meeting on a Monday, the 20th of October. When we first arrived tot to the church, I already could tell this meeting will be a majority of older men and very few women, which turned out to be true. There were men in their middle ages largely, and a few younger men in their late 20’s and early 30’s. There were at least five women that had attended, one seemed from her late 20’s and the rest in their late 30’s, early 40’s.
