They empower followers through persuasion and empathic understanding to propose new and controversial ideas without fear of chastisement or ridicule” (Kelly 2003, Stone, Russell & Patterson 2003, p.1). They are energetic, enthusiastic role models passionate about what they do. They are inspirational leaders depicting positive change in their followers by enhancing and motivating the morale and performance of their colleagues; e.g., connecting them to their sense of identity and self, to the mission and organization’s cooperative identity, challenge them to be accountable, to take ownership for their work, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and align them with tasks that optimize their performances (Downton, 1983).
