Types of Libyan Food Have you ever tasted traditional Libyan food? If not, we would like to take you on a journey to discover some traditional Libyan foods and their tasteful ingredients. Libya is a big country situated in the heart of the northern coast of Africa on the Mediterranean Sea. With such a strategic location, Libya has always had a rich and diverse culture that is a mixture of Mediterranean and African cultures which has influenced that part of the world throughout history. That diversity is tastefully reflected in the traditional foods that the Libyans of today eat in their everyday life and consider as their traditional food. While the dishes can vary from one area of the country to another, almost all traditional Libyan foods contain barley or wheat as one of their main ingredients. Some dishes are more popular in some parts of the country than others, for instance some dishes are mostly popular in coastal cities and towns where seafood is colorfully present on the table. Some other dishes are mainly famous in the southern part of the country where the desert life of the Bedwen tribes still governs what they have on their tables every day. But with some select few dishes, regardless of where you are in Libya, you can still find people enjoying them. Couscous is a dish mostly popular on the northern coast of the country. As a matter of fact, we can say that it is popular along the whole north coast of Africa. The dish involves cooking two things: the couscous which is made of wheat or barley that is ground into coarse flour just like semolina (but without the stickiness), and the vegetable and fish or meat sauce to go with it. After the couscous is steam cooked, it is marinated with the meat sauce and served with vegetables and meat (or fish) on top.
