Scenario Planning: Climate Change and Transportation – The Future Impact on Tourism Climate Change As we all know it is impossible to predict the future but forward-looking organisations (government and related tourism bodies) can plan for different futures. It is essential to plan for the future to prevent our precious resources from depleting. By identifying potential issues with regards to climate change, the depletion of resources may be reduced and this will in turn create a greater awareness of sustainable development within society as a whole. Climate Change Significant climate change can be expected globally in the coming years (Haugen & Matterson, 2011). Most, if not all, countries will experience the impacts of climate change. Some parts of the world will experience a drier climate, whilst other parts will experience an increase in precipitation. The rise of surface water could make flooding and landslides occur especially in high-risk areas. Increasing sea temperatures and melting ice caps and glaciers will lead to a rise in sea-levels. Furthermore, some regions will witness an increase in powerful storms and winds. It is expected that the impact of climate change will vary on local, regional and national levels (Hanssen-Bauer et al., 2009). Country Action Plans The end of 2012 saw a disastrous event strike Earth. This event was expected to be a result of global warming and changing conditions in the world’s environment. The disaster caused massive damage and destruction. However, the human race survived the ordeal. After this event, world leaders realised that something had to be done to prevent this from happening again and to help sustain life on Earth for future generations.
