Even from a few months old they will smile and engage with their carer and by four months can vocalise by ‘babbling’ and ‘cooing’. From six months old an infant will become more interested in social interaction, although that depends on the amount of time spent with other children and his/hers personality, they will also have a fear of strangers and distress at the separation of a parent or carer. By the time they are nine months old an infant can recognise familiar and unfamiliar faces. From one year ‘temper tantrums’ may have begun. They become more demanding and assertive and can express rage at being told ‘no’, they have no idea of sharing and a strong sense of ‘mine’.
Summary of the book This book follows the neglect and abuse of Katie and is told in story format for parts of the book. Hughes gives a commentary at the end of each chapter on his thoughts of the issues of how each stage of abuse affects not only Katie’s development but also how it was affecting her mother Sally as well. After Katie is placed into foster care the story details the two different sides that Katie shows her foster parents. She goes from being a happy child when things go her way into an aggressive and mean child who wants to get even by destroying other peoples possessions. Katie’s caseworker struggles to find a foster home for her and to find the right therapist to help her with her lack of attachment to anyone.

A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer is a real life story about a little boy who was mentally, physically, and emotionally abused by his mother. The book begins with the ending where Dave is rescued by his teachers and School nurse. I think this was a good way to start the book so that after the ending he can tell us about all the experiences he went through to get there. In the beginning, Dave had a normal life with his mom, dad and two siblings. His parents’ marriage started to fall apart and that’s when things started to change.
I would describe Gates feeling towards his mother as compassionate. When Gates mother started going through the depression he was hurt as well. He felt “ powerless” because there was nothing he could do about his mothers situation. Due to his mothers sickness he began to withdraw from other kids and he felt devastated. He watched his mother change everyday and go through stages of her depression.

Children do develop differently depending on their genetic makeup and environment, parents and guardians can play a huge role to ensure that the child grows up to be an emotionally mature individual. Proper encouragement, emotional support, and guidance are essential to make sure the child develops as morally and emotionally upright individual (Aviles & Anderson, 2006). As the child begins to become aware of the surrounding environment, the parents are required to know that a crying child is an essential part of emotional
The power family has becomes weakened as a child becomes a teenager from the influence he/she has from peer groups and the media. Family, in adult years, gains back some of its power when a person comes in to the role of a maternal partner/parent themselves. Family is the most important socialization agent, what ever a person learns from his/her family may stay with them for life and then one day be passed on to his/her children. Around the age of two/three years old, a child has his/her first encounter with the media in the form of TV. The child encounters socialization through the characters, images, words, and story line.
