Firstly a functional objective is a quantifiable statement of a departments goals which should enable it to contribute to the achievement of the business objective whereas a corporate objective is a statement of a business’ goals which should include measurable targets. On one hand I believe that the existence of both objectives will contribute to achieving the corporate objecting of enhancing the brand. A well-established business will divide its activities into several business functions which traditionally include Finance, Marketing, Operations and Human resource management. M&S are looking to enhance the brand and to the clothing, Home and food offer and make the stores easier to shop at. The finance department would have to find the funds in order to develop this, without this department the funds could be wasted. Marketing would be looking at what the customer needs/wants through means of surveys, questionnaires etc. And once this has been achieved an advertising campaign would be launched in order to enhance the awareness of M&S’ offers which in turn will enhance the brand name. The operations side of the business will carry these actions through. Lastly the Human resources management will be looking to increase the productivity of staff, and customers will then believe that M&S only employ the best, which again will enhance the brand name. In all the functional objectives, if work well with business can greaten the possibility of a business achieving its corporate objectives. One of M&S’ corporate objectives include improving the focus on freshness and convenience of food and if the potential customers are more aware of this the brand is more likely to be enhanced.
